Some fans need that little bit extra help and Electrical Eggs UK was established in 1995 to assist convention organisers to plan an accessible event, compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act. The Access Service Handbook provided information and advice on making a convention accessible for everyone without compromising on the aims & theme of the event. Additional materials were provided including signage, badges and forms. Eggs UK also managed a database of fans with special needs, mainly to avoid repetative form filling, which was provided to conventions using the Access Service to make appropriate adjustments, well in advance of the actual event.
Now, 18 years after the legislation was introduced, most convention organisers should be familiar with their duty of care. Electrical Eggs UK, still managed by Michelle 'Cuddles' Drayton-Harrold, now functions as as Advice & Advocacy service. Fans seeking advice about access rights or who feel they have been treated unfairly at a convention, please get in touch.
Electrical Eggs UK is a free, fan-run organisation.
